Het klimaat in Balearen - Spanje

The Balearic Islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate, characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the year. The average annual temperature is usually 16 - 17°C. Winds vary with respect to terrain and situation but northerlies predominate in the cold season and easterlies in the summer, with the addition of local breezes. Menorca and the eastern side of Mallorca are exposed to a cold and dry wind from the north, the Tramuntana.

The annual mean precipitation of Mallorca is approx. 600 mm, concentrated mainly in late summer and autumn - especially in October. However, rainfall is strongly related to topography. In mountainous areas the maximum can exceed 1 400 mm per year whereas the minimum on the coast is lower than 300 mm per year. The Balearic Islands, as all Mediterranean regions, are prone to cyclones. During these extreme weather events, rainfall of over 200 mm in 24 hours has been registered from time to time, leading to damaging flash floods. In summer, rainfall is practically non-existent.
